God is not the God of Pinterest
I LOVE Pinterest. Little bites of inspiration that get the creative juices going. I also love seeing bible quotes and inspirational Christian messages on Pinterest – just what I need to get me through the day.
But… a bible study I did recently has really challenged me.
A pithy quote is lovely, but easily turned into an inspirational poster that lacks the context of the Bible.
A favourite example is ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ Philippians 4:13.
I can picture myself using this to build my confidence before a challenge, and before I know it I have turned it into ‘I will be successful in all things’, not quite what Paul meant.
Paul was in prison, he had endured poverty, hunger, and yet he was content. Paul’s revelation was not that God would allow us to have everything our own way, but rather that God would provide us with the strength and comfort to endure all, and have His peace through all.
So let’s not reduce God to an inspirational quote. He is inspiring, sure, but so much bigger than a one-liner. He is the Author and the Creator, let Him lead so that we may follow and experience what Paul really reveals to us – peace despite our circumstances, strength to endure and hope!
By all means let’s share our faith and the words of the Bible everywhere – but it’s our responsibility to use them wisely.
