When you think about the year starting over again, what do you think?
How do you feel about the prospect of a new year beginning?
Are you excited, afraid, curious, frustrated? Maybe you are one of the very few people in this world that truly loves new year resolutions, setting new challenges and goals, and actually manages to carry them out on a regular basis and doesn’t spend time feeling guilty about broken resolutions.
It’s too easy to look back on the past and only see the negative, which, can make us feel like we have failed before we even start. To think that the future must ALWAYS be the same as the past.
I would like to encourage you this year, by suggesting that it is not that you are incapable of real and lasting change, but that it might be the straight-jackets that we put ourselves in as a method of change.
Don’t get me wrong – there is a time and a need for discipline, for self-control, for developing life-changing habits, but we need to recognise our insufficiency to change ourselves, relying on self.
For Christian women, self-reliance is the enemy of true transformation.
How about this?
Instead of devising hard and fast, rigid ‘resolutions’ that can so easily become a mountain we can’t jump over (usually because we are not really sure how to begin, or how we are supposed to do it), can we ‘look to Jesus’ in a journey of transformation?
Hebrews 12 1:2 holds the key.
12:1 Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside very weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the same, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We start with Jesus, we finish with Jesus.
Before we try to change anything, we get alongside Him, we open our eyes, ears and hearts to Him.
We recognise that He is our Provider, He wants to be our Provider.
He has everything we need to make this journey of true transformation possible and prosperous.
This is the area I want to face head on this year for myself, and if you are feeling lead the same way, then I would like to encourage you in this process.
In the meantime, I would like to leave you with
3 John 2
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul propers.
